The Freeport Fire Department held a vigil for the late Joseph Giordano, a former captain, on April 27.

Giordano, of Port Jefferson Station, formerly of Freeport, died on April 13 from the Covid-19 virus.

Giordano was interred at St. Charles Cemetery, in Farmingdale.

While Giordano served as a New York City Police Officer, he was a longtime volunteer at the Freeport Fire Department.

Giordano joined the fire department in 1974, going on to serve as captain of the Hose Company No. 2 from 1979-1980 and captain of the Truck Company No. 1 from 1989-1990.

He is the second ex-captain in the Freeport Fire Department to die from the coronavirus.

Through the Freeport Truck Company, Giordano supported the “Dead End Kinds” drill team, where he served as an assistant coach with Don Mauersberger.

Giordano helped found the Dead End Kids Alumni Association to help reconnect old members and have them mentor and inspire new members. Giordano also served as president of the alumni association, as well as the Truck Company’s financial secretary, warden, Benevolent Association representative and historian.

Giordano had also worked for the Village of Freeport at the Highway Department and Recreation Center.

He was the husband of the late Charlene, brother of retired NYPD Police Chief Vincent Giordano and father of Joseph, Heather, Bryan and Richard.

Joseph, 27, has Aspergers and was dependent on Giordano for financial support. Heather, Bryan and Richard are all in the early stages of their respective careers and also depended on their father for help and support.

The family started a GoFundMe to help alleviate their situation and as of April 27, is only $10,000 away from reaching their $100,000 goal. To donate to the family, visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/dad-succumbs-to-covid19-leaving-4-kids
