Invitations to IPCC dinner rekindle resentment

Invitations to a dinner dance honoring retiring State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg stirred up simmering resentment between political foes Glenn Ingoglia and Mark Tannenbaum last week.

The feud dates back to last March, when Ingoglia, a member of the Voice Party, ran against Michael McGinty, a member of the Unity Party, in the first contested mayoral election in the Village of Island Park since 1990. During the campaign, Tannenbaum, who supports the Unity Party — as does former U.S. Senator and Island Park native Alfonse D’Amato — sent a letter to the Herald revealing that Ingoglia had been issued a number of traffic citations in Suffolk County, alluding to Ingoglia’s participation in a fight last year and opining that Ingoglia’s behavior was “inappropriate” for a candidate seeking public office. Ingoglia claimed that Tannenbaum was acting in the interest of the Unity Party when he sent the letter.

Resentment between two was renewed in late September, when Ingoglia, the president of the Island Park Chamber of Commerce, mailed invitations to the chamber’s dinner dance, and advertisement applications for its program, to its members, as well as members of the Long Beach chamber, of which Tannenbaum is executive vice president. At its Oct. 23 dinner dance, the Island Park Chamber of Commerce will, in addition to honoring others, present a lifetime achievement award to Weisenberg.

Tannenbaum took exception to the mailing, claiming that Ingoglia was stepping on his toes by inviting his members to take part in an event 10 days before the Long Beach chamber is set to hold its annual dinner dance. The Long Beach chamber will also honor Weisenberg at its event, on Nov. 2.

“We’ve always had our dinner on the Sunday before election day,” Tannenbaum said, referring to the Nov. 4 general election. “Suddenly Ingoglia schedules his dinner ten days before ours. Then, without asking, he sends a letter soliciting donations from our members.”
