Are builders cutting corners?

The same goes for using metal joist hangers, which some refer to as tecos. (As an aside, the Teco company, which made a type of connector, went out of business almost two decades ago, but some trades-people can’t let go, and still refer to the connectors as tecos.) The connectors used today should be zinc-coated or higher-quality stainless steel, since salt air, fertilizers, treated wood preservatives and prolonged air pollution or fume exposure causes the galvanized version to corrode. Wood I-joists, properly calculated, can span longer distances than equal depth lumber. It’s a matter of understanding that you’re looking at building “systems,” where materials are chosen for the way they work together. Some just work together better than others.
