Assessing the damage in Island Park and Oceanside
Alex Costello/Herald
The roof of this vacant repair shop on Austin Boulevard lied crumpled on the ground 50 feet from the building, after the winds blew it off.

Most of the flood waters have receded, the damage on the South Shore was still visible, especially in Island Park.

Electricity is intermittent in Oceanside and completely absent in Island Park. The further south one goes, the stronger the scent of moisture and wet wood becomes. People have already begun the cleanup, piling up curbs next to their house with bags full of the sogging and warped remains of their furniture and belongings.

But the cleanup is happening. There's no word yet on how long cleanup will take, or how much damage has been done.
