Francis X. Hegarty students learn fire safety from Island Park firefighters

Each year, the month of October is designated National Fire Prevention Month. Fire departments across the United States use this time to visit local elementary schools to teach youngsters proper safety procedures they should use in case of fire or other emergencies.

On Oct. 5, members of the Island Park Fire Department spent time at Francis X. Hegarty School to review with students important safety practices including the Stop, Drop, and Roll technique and EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home). The presentations to students included a video instructional lesson and a demonstration of fire fighting equipment. Kindergarten students received a special experience as they went for a fire truck ride.
