Heavyweights come to Island Park

Leon Spinks was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world when he beat Muhammad Ali on Feb. 15, 1978. His brother Michael Spinks won the heavyweight title by beating Larry Holmes Sept. 21, 1985. Both brothers were Olympic Gold medalists in boxing.

On July 26 the brothers were to take part in the fight against cancer at the 20th Annual Pat Cairo Family Foundation golf outing, but when the event was cancelled due to weather, event caterer Butch Yamali stepped in bringing the brothers to his establishments; Maliblu Shore Club in Lido Beach and Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park.

At Peter’s the brothers ate six-pound lobsters each and signed autographs for fans.

In the past boxers Larry Holmes and George Cooney have teamed up to raise money for the foundation and cancer research.

Pat Cairo fought cancer from 1989 until she died in 1995. The Pat Cairo Family Foundation, Inc., was organized in 1995 to help those struggling with Cancer.

The Pat Cairo Family Foundation Golf Outing is rescheduled to Tuesday, Aug 9th, 2016 at Lido Golf Course, Lido Beach.
