April 25, at 10 AM there will be a groundbreaking ceremony at the Francis X Hegarty School in Island Park for a new playground, part of the Kiwanis International 100th Anniversary Tour.

After Hurricane Sandy, the planning management team of the East Meadow Barnum Woods Elementary School adopted Hegarty and raised $18,500 through several events including chocolate sales.

Last October there was an outdoor assembly in East Meadow where they presented Superintendent Rosmarie Bovino and Principal Jacob Russum the check.

In November New York District Kiwanis International Foundation Chair and Island Park resident David Rothman learned of the Centennial Tour and grant of $25,000 for a new playground. He spoke with Bovino and the school board about it, and now a new playground will be constructed.

Kiwanis International President, Dr Jon Button will be there as well as New York District Governor Eric Paul, members from International and across the state. Members of the Island Park club, Lt. Governor Bruce Brooks, President Gene Vandermosten will also attend. There will be members of the Barnum Woods School present as well.
