Powerful nor'easter blows across Oceanside, Island Park

A powerful nor'easter whipped across Nassau County, dumping  3 to 6 inches on the South Shore. The snow, at times, mixed with light rain, leaving a thin sheen of ice atop the white stuff in Oceanside and Island Park.

Island Park Mayor Michael McGinty said he and the board of trustees took steps to ensure that the roads were safe, including pre-treating and pre-salting roads on Wednesday afternoon, and that the Department of Public Works worked at full force throughout the evening and early morning as snow fell.

"I was awake all evening, and in communication with our village DPW, monitoring the snow and road conditions in the village," McGinty said, adding that he drove block to block, making sure the roads and streets were safe and plowed. "Together, we will overcome this most recent challenge".

As the storm ensued, the Long Island Rail Road was running 10 to 15 behind schedule systemwide. NICE Bus also reported delays.

PSEG-LI reported that about 3,300 Long Islanders lost power overnight, with 150 outages on Thursday morning.

The Island Park Public Schools and Oceanside School District were each closed on Thursday.
