Schools celebrate nature with new trees

To honor the environment, students planted trees all over school grounds in Oceanside. At School 5, the Oceanside Garden Club, an organization in existence since 1975, donated the tree. The club was honored at School 5’s Morning Meeting for giving back to the community, just as Wangari did in the monthly school wide read-aloud, Wangari’s Trees of Peace. The second graders at School 5 planted the tree under the direction of Craig Cammarata, School 5’s Head Custodian.

At School 6, children gathered in front of the school where several hydrangea and lilac shrubs were to be planted and helped shovel the dirt into the planting holes. Rhonda Gelbwasser, School #6’s principal, showed the children how to fill the holes and make sure the dirt is firmed around the base of the shrub.
