Winter storm brings flooding to Island Park

Posted

As high tide hit around 7 a.m. this morning the added winter storm mix of rain, wind and bitter cold breached Island Park infrastructure, which is currently undergoing construction work to reduce flooding. Throughout the morning, many car alarms could be heard going off as water reached the undercarriage of many vehicles with salt water.

Island Park, which is vulnerable to flooding because of its location on the South Shore, is no stranger to flooding, but that doesn't mean residents shouldn't be prepared.

On Facebook, residence took to the site to ask people driving slow down on certain blocks so as not to create a wake tide that ripples into homes. The Village's Facebook page warned of the threat yesterday, providing important numbers to residence. Such as how to report an outage or downed wire by calling PSEG Long Island's 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or using PSEG web chat feature at psegliny.com.

Today, the Village reminds locals to stay inside and for any true emergency situations to call the Island Park Fire Department at 516-431-1213 or 911.

The Village's website also has a dedicated section to provide reference material to residence about flood planning, impact and insurance. At VillageOfIslandPark.com/flood-readiness/.

A coastal flood warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. this morning. A wind advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Friday night.
