Driver of overturned SUV airlifted to NUMC

An accident backed up traffic on the Loop Parkway on Wednesday, after the road was temporarily closed to allow a county medical helicopter to airlift an injured motorist to Nassau University Medical Center.

The accident occurred around noon, when the driver of an SUV traveling northbound on the Loop Parkway lost control of the vehicle, overturned and landed on the grassy median between lanes, according to Point Lookout-Lido Fire Chief Brian Guerin. Fire officials said that the driver was seriously injured.

Both county and state police were on the scene, and the PLLFD responded under the command of Chief Jimmy Walsh.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle, and Guerin could not provide any further details on the driver's condition.

The Loop Parkway was closed temporarily to allow the helicopter to transport the accident victim to NUMC in East Meadow, Guerin said, but traffic remained open in both directions while the accident was being cleared.
