Boat collides with sandbar in Reynolds Channel

The Point Lookout Lido Fire Department rushed to aid two adults and a child Sunday afternoon after their boat barreled into a sand bar off the shores of Lido Beach, just northwest of the Loop Parkway drawbridge.

The boat was traveling east in Sea Dog Creek, a part of Reynolds Channel, at about 12:20 p.m., and struck the sand bar, which was most likely exposed due to extreme tides caused by last weekend’s Supermoon, according to Brian Guerin, the department’s assistant chief.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Nassau County Police Department, Town of Hempstead Bay Constables, the Freeport Fire Department’s marine unit, and TowBoatU.S., a marine salvage company from Bay Shore, responded to the scene. The three boat passengers were transported to Lido Beach’s West Marina where PLLFD ambulances awaited.

“Multiple agencies were involved, everyone worked well together and the operation went smoothly,” Guerin said.

One suffered serious injuries, Guerin added, and all three were taken to an area hospital for further evaluation.
