Blues for an Alabama Sky
Explore the harsh realities of the Great Depression and the impact on 1930s Harlem in Pearl Cleague’s play, presented by Nassau Community College’s Department of Theatre and Dance. The creative euphoria of the Harlem Renaissance has given way to the Great Depression. “Nobody’s working and nobody’s got prospects,” declares Angel, a jazz singer recently fired from the Cotton Club. Not so, says Guy, a gay designer who looks after Angel and is armed with a portfolio of flamboyant sketches for Josephine Baker, star of the Folies Bergeres. These characters and others are caught up in the conflicting currents and politics of the time.
Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 26-28, 8 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 29, 3 p.m. $9, $5 ages 18 and under. Nassau Community College’s Little Theatre, Garden City. (516) 572-7676.
