Spooky stuff

Haunted beach house

The swine flu was detected at the Beach House on West Beech Street on Oct. 21. Lydia and Beetlejuice also made an appearance and the pixels from the Cablevision commercials took a night off to attend the bar's annual Halloween costume party called “The Nightmare.”

"It was unbelievable," said co-owner Ben Freiser. "It was great!"

Freiser said the bar's management were concerned about attendance due to impending rain and a scheduled World Series game. They predicted the wet stuff and the big game might keep people indoors and glued to the television.

But to Freiser's surprise "tons" of patrons came through the door to show off their costumes and party while watching the Yankees and Phillies. "When something would happen during the game people would start screaming," Freiser said of the atmosphere.

The bar gave out $1,000 in cash prizes for the best costumes of the night and will host a Dead Celebrity costume contest on Friday the 13th.
