Hundreds turn out for Long Beach City Manager's 10K race

The 36th Annual Long Beach City Manager’s 10-Mile Trophy Run, held in memory of one of its founders, former Recreation Leader Ralph Kaplan, took place on May 27. Despite the rain, 435 entrants crossed the finish line. Franklin Diaz from Farmingdale was the first male runner to finish with a time of 56:29 and Laura Rodriguez was the first female with a time of 1:04:45. Peter Hawkins was the first wheelchair finisher with a time of 52:26.

Fifteen year old Steven Hurst of Long Beach was the first male finisher under 19 years old, Lexie Ennis of Long Beach was the first female finisher in the 20 to 24 age group, Sue Montefusco of Long Beach was the first female finisher in the 25 to 29 age group, Lesli Hiller of Long Beach was the first female finisher in the 45 to 49 age group.

Other Long Beach residents who took home trophies were Kathleen Solano, third place finisher in the women’s 25 to 29 age group, Glen Granzin, second place finisher in the men’s 35 to 39 age group, Jennifer Mullarkey, second place finisher in the women’s 35 to 39 age group, Rob Devinney, third place finisher in the men’s 40 to 44 age group, Carina Ferry, second place finisher in the women’s 40 to 44 age group, and Bill McDermott, second place finisher in the men’s 55 to 59 age group.

Other notable finishers were Andrew Smith who received the Thomas Moriarty award for being the first male finisher from Long Beach and Melissa Moschetto who received the Marianne Carroll award for being the first female finisher from Long Beach. The first Armed Forces Veteran finisher was Mike Baard of Merrick. Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman also completed the race.

Long Beach Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Lawrence Elovich served as the Master of Ceremonies of the event and Thomas Moriarty was on hand to present the award to the first male finisher from Long Beach. Recreation Superintendent Emeritus Robert L. Carroll presented the Marianne Carroll award to the first female finisher from Long Beach. Recreation Leader Paul Ferrante and Recreation Commissioner Bob Piazza presented trophies and medals to all the age group trophy winners.

Ralph Kaplan’s sister Lori Kaplan Stranges was on hand to present the Ralph Kaplan award. This year’s winners were City Manager Jack Schnirman and Rusty Primeau.

Piazza noted that the event could not have been the success it was without the help of all the volunteers including the Long Beach Police Auxiliary and the Long Beach Fire Department.
