Now that we’ve bid farewell to the holiday season, families can escape the January doldrums with another Disney On Ice extravaganza. This time around Disney On Ice presents “Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey,” which arrives at Nassau Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 5, and continues through Sunday, Jan. 8.
With Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse as tour guides, audiences visit the enchanting worlds of favorite Disney tales: The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Lilo & Stitch, along with Peter Pan.
If “Magical Journey” seems familiar, that’s because the show has been around for some time in various incarnations. One of the staples of the Disney on Ice repertoire, this ice spectacle has been completely revised and refreshed over the years, actually eight times since 1995, according to Director Jerry Bilik. “It’s a faster paced, more exciting production than before,” he said, “that uses classic and new stories and an inventive way to great audience response. In these four stories we move from one adventure to another, with a tremendous amount of energy.”
While Mickey and Minnie get top billing, they are not the stars of this production. They are certainly crowd-pleasers – along with their friends Donald, Daisy and Goofy – but the show really belongs to the beloved characters from the Disney movies that are portrayed here during the production’s one and a half hours. Through artistic skating and graceful acrobatics, “Mickey and Minnie’s Magical Journey” recreates the defining moments from these treasured films.
The arena is filled with music and that singular Disney magic – involving storyline, music and innovative costumes and props – that transforms the ice into a jungle adventure in the African Pride Lands with Simba and Nala, an enchanting undersea kingdom with Ariel and Sebastian, a Hawaiian luau with Lilo and Stitch, and a trip to jolly old London with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell.
