Lifeguards rescue swimmers on Memorial Day

Two youths had to be rescued from the ocean off of Long Beach on Memorial Day. According to the Long Beach Police Department, a 14-year-old was yelling for help while in the water by the jetties on Edward Boulevard beach on May 31 at about 6:15 p.m., when lifeguards are off duty.

Police officer Robert Fales, while he was on beach patrol, observed the youth in distress and called for assistance. Lifeguards arrived, went into the water and rescued the boy along with a 15-year-old. The 14 year-old was unconscious when he was removed from the water but was revived.

Both youths were transported to and treated at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside. Their condition was reported as not life threatening.
