MLK dinner dance
The Martin Luther King Jr. Center, at at 615 Riverside Blvd., will hold its annual dinner dance on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person or $520 for a table of eight. For more information call 889-6300 or email info@lbmlk.org. 
Ice skating show
The City of Long Beach and Long Beach Skating Academy will host an Ice Skating Holiday Show on Jan. 9 from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. in honor of National Skating Month, featuring local and national level ice skaters, at the Ice Arena at 150 W. Bay Drive. The cost is $5 for adults, $2 for children.
Art exhibit
The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, at 1125 Broadway in Hewlett, is hosting a special exhibit by the Long Beach Art League until Jan. 28. The opening reception is on Jan. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Neighborhood watch meeting
West End residents interested in learning about the Neighborhood Watch Program are invited to an informational meeting at 7p.m. on Jan. 27 at the West End Community Center on Maryland Avenue.
Get your theater tickets
The Avanti Society will host a trip to the Broadway productions of Ragtime on April 7 and Jersey Boys on June 9. Tickets are $100. For information and to reserve tickets call 889-5086.

Laugh a day
View and discuss the Emmy nominated PBS documentary and winner of the Long Island Film Festival Laugh A Day with the film’s producer/director, Steven Taub, at 2 p.m. on Jan. 12. Following the 30 minute film there will be a discussion about the importance of laughter, documentary film making and comedians.

Current affairs talk
This lecture by Saul Silas Fathi will focus on the latest news about North Korea, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Israel and Palenstine. A question and answer period will follow at this event that starts at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 14. A native of Baghdad Iraq, Fathi is the author of “Full Circle: Escape from Baghdad & The Return.”

How to pay less taxes
Barry Lisak, an IRS enrolled agent, will present a seminar to help reduce one’s Federal and NYS taxes at 2 p.m. on Jan. 13. Topics will include education, retirement, home ownership, charitable, medical, investment, employee and miscellaneous deductions. The new 2009 tax laws will be highlighted.
Reading with monsters
The Nassau County Library System, Feld Entertainment and the Long Beach Public Library are offering a reading program with many incentives, prizes for readers and one grand prize winner from the county. Children ages 6 to 12 are asked to participate by reading books from a suggested reading list, though it will not be a requirement to read books on the list. The library with the most participants will receive a monster truck and driver visit on Jan. 28. The program is anticipated to run from now until Jan. 18. Signup has started in the youth services department at Long Beach Library.
Art show
The Long Beach Library’s West End branch, at 810 W. Beech Street, will have an art exhibit featuring the West End Arts group until year’s end. Library hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information call 432-2704.
Tunes from the east side
With Ismael Butera on accordion, David Hofstra on stand-up bass and Deborah Karpel providing vocals, the East Side Trio will bring the audience back to a bygone era with their unique interpretations of popular songs of the 20th Century. Their repertoire includes great American jazz standards and popular songs of the 1950s and ‘60s. This concert starts at 2 p.m. on Jan. 10.
Communications course
Nassau Community College will offer a course on interpersonal communication at the library on Mondays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. starting on Feb. 1. A course description can be accessed at www.ncc.edu by clicking the MyNCCTab at the top, and then clicking the link to "class schedule." 
Fitness for older adults
Exercise physiologist Magda Rosenberg will conduct physical fitness routines for older adults on Fridays at 9 a.m.

Opt art class
Join Marilyn Kestin on Jan. 12, 19 and 26 at 9:30 a.m. to learn about optical art and three-dimensional drawing. Make drawings that look as though they would pop right off the page. Registration is required. For information call 431-3510.
Broadway jazz dance
Seniors are invited to learn dance routines choreographed to popular show tunes by professional dance instructor Laura Murphy on Thursdays Jan. 7, 14 and 21 from 10 a.m.
Latin aerobics
Seniors can join instructor Stephanie Durso in her Low-Impact Latin Aerobics class on Monday, Jan. 11 an 25 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Senior art reception
On Jan. 27 at 10:30 a.m. there will be an senior art exhibit showcasing the work of the Magnolia Senior Center’s budding and experienced artists who participated in West End Art’s Art à la Carte Program. During this program, West End Arts members shared their art expertise with the center’s seniors.

Music that makes you move
Movement to music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
Seated tai chi
Instructor Judith Weitz invites Long Beach seniors to join her program where they will learn to tone and stretch all their muscles without putting stress on their knees, feet, thighs or back. Seated Tai Chi is scheduled on Thursdays starting at 11 a.m.
Sit and get fit
Seniors are invited to improve their health through exercises done sitting or standing next to a chair. Resistance bands, weights and small balls will be used. The sit and get fit program meets on Fridays at 11 a.m.

Start saving money now! Hot off the presses is the Senior Friendly Establishments List for 2010 prepared by the Long Beach Advisory Board for Seniors.It includes close to 40 local businesses that offer discounts to seniors. Pick up a copy at the 2nd floor main office of the senior center.

Winter exercise classes
The Rec is offering two courses for adults this winter: a yoga/pilates class and a boot camp, which will be held in the teen center (above the Ice Arena) on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. The registration fee for each class is $50 for Long Beach residents and $100 for non-residents.
