A driver trapped in a minivan after a head-on collision with a truck was removed from her vehicle by Long Beach firefighters in Atlantic Beach on Wednesday.

According to Fire Chief Richard Corbett, the Long Beach Fire Department, as well as units from Inwood and Lawrence-Cedarhurst, responded to the accident that occurred on Park Street in East Atlantic Beach on Wednesday at 12:10 p.m. Atlantic Beach Rescue also assisted, Corbett said.

"A lady that was driving eastbound collided head-on with an American Water construction truck that was driving westbound," Corbett said.

Corbett said that the driver of the minivan was heavily trapped inside of her car, and suffered a severe leg injury.

Nassau County Ambulance Bureau, Police and Aviation, and a total of 25 firefighters were on scene.

"We had to put the Hurst tools into operation," Corbett said. "She was in serious condition, and was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center."
