Long Beach police responded to a Shore Road apartment building on Sunday after a tenant jumped to his death, in what police described as an apparent suicide.

Police said the incident occurred just after 6 a.m. on Sunday, after a 29-year-old man jumped from a fourth floor balcony at the six-story high-rise at 465 Shore Road, between Lincoln and Franklin boulevards. The victim’s name was not released.

“Long Beach police arrived on the scene shortly after the victim jumped,” said Lt. Eric Cregeen, a spokesman for the Long Beach Police Department.

According to Cregeen, the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:19 a.m.

“The Nassau County Crime Scene Unit was notified and responded, and the body was removed to medical examiner’s office, where they will be conducting an autopsy,” Cregeen said.

Police did not disclose the circumstances that led up to the man’s death, only to say that they believe he was distraught. The incident had a number of residents in the area rattled; some told the Herald that there was a large police presence on Shore Road on Sunday, and at least one resident reported hearing screams from the building at the time of the incident.
