Local indie folk-rocker Mike Krum and his band performed for hundreds of spectators on the National Boulevard beach and the Allegria Hotel last Friday, where he tore through a set of infectious indie rock and folk songs that has made the local artist an emerging act in the New York City rock scene.

Krum, joined by opening act sowFLo and Marc Vivonetto, brought a close to the Second Annual Surf Week, an event sponsored by the Allegria and presented by NY Sea Productions, which included several benefits and surf contests.

“Hello Long Beach,” the singer and songwriter told the crowd, which drew cheers from spectators who lined the boardwalk and beach. “Welcome to Surf Week.”

The Garden City Park native and the former English teacher performed some songs off his first full-length album “110.” For the past several years, Krum and his band have played at various music venues in the New York City area, including the Mercury Lounge, the Bowery Ballroom, the Highline Ballroom and Webster Hall.

He recently toured the West Coast from San Diego to San Francisco, and finished his run with a performance at the Playboy Mansion for a US Doctors for Africa benefit.

“We’re here for Mike, he’s awesome,” said Mike Orza, owner of Webair — a Garden City-based web hosting company and one of the sponsors of Surf Week — as he caught the show from the beach. “We’re 100 percent behind Long Beach surfing and the vibe that it’s creating here at the moment.”

Long Beach resident Adam Gordon, 41, was one of the hundreds who turned out for the show, saying that the Krum concert added to the cultural richness of the city.

“It’s a beautiful night, with great music,” Gordon said. “This is why people love Long Beach — you can come out with your neighbors and have a ball.”
