Mount Sinai South Nassau is the only hospital on the south shore of Nassau and Suffolk Counties to earn the High Performing” rating in maternity care for the second consecutive year, according to the 2024 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.” The Oceanside hospital is the nearest hospital for Long Beach residents.

The recognition highlights the hospital’s commitment to excellence in various aspects of maternity care, including a reduced C-section delivery rate, low rates of early elective delivery, and decreased risks for unexpected newborn complications.

In addition to achieving the highest rating, Mount Sinai South Nassau stands out for its dedication to routine birthing-friendly practices, transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, and a high rate of exclusive infant breastfeeding.

“This latest U.S. News rating confirms what Mount Sinai South Nassau mothers and their families already know: Mount Sinai South Nassau provides the safest and most advanced high-quality maternity care on the South Shore,” said Mount Sinai South Nassau’s President, Dr. Adhi Sharma. “We are delighted to be the only hospital in Nassau and Suffolk counties to be awarded this prestigious recognition. Our maternity team is dedicated to our patients and to the communities we serve.”

A record-breaking 680 hospitals nationwide, offering labor and delivery services, submitted detailed data for consideration in the ratings. The U.S. News methodology relies on objective measures such as C-section rates, newborn complication rates, exclusive breastfeeding rates, early elective delivery rates, and vaginal birth after C-section rates.

“The rating is a direct result of our team’s commitment to meeting the needs of mothers who decide to deliver at Mount Sinai South Nassau,” said Alan Garely, MD, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “Through teamwork and collaboration, each mother and newborn receive the compassionate care and services that they deserve from the very beginning to the day they are discharged home, I am extraordinarily proud of our team.”

Beyond the U.S. News rating, Mount Sinai South Nassau is recognized as a “Baby Friendly” hospital by the World Health Organization and holds a spot among the “Best Regional Hospitals” in the New York metro area. In the 2023-24 “Best Hospitals” list, the hospital received nine “High Performing” badges across various specialties.

In 2023, Mount Sinai South Nassau welcomed over 2,008 newborns through the Women’s and Children’s Services’ Mother-Baby Unit. The unit has private rooms with hotel-like accommodations, spacious labor and delivery rooms, and a Level Two Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with six beds for specialized care.

The hospital is committed to providing care and ensuring a positive experience for all families.
