The BACH Jewish Center and Beth El Synagogue looked south of the border for a party idea. The Long Beach temples celebrated Purim with a lively Mexican-themed fiesta on Feb. 28.

The evening began with the traditional reading of the Megillah scroll of Esther, which depicts the story of Purim. To drown out the name of the wicked adversary, Haman, children shook noisemakers and jumped on bubble-wrap.

The banquet hall at Beth El was decorated with true Mexican flavor: Sombreros, chili peppers, fiesta banners, and other decorative Mexican material adorned the room and tables.

Guests were welcomed by the music of an authentic Mexican mariachi band, and the tantalizing smell of kosher Mexican food, including nachos, tacos Spanish rice and taquitos. During the party, guests danced and enjoyed the thrill of riding the mechanical bull. Children were able to walk the red carpet and showcase their unique costumes, the most creative receiving a special prize. Following the fashion show, the children had a chance to hit the chili pepper piñata and enjoy the candy found inside.
