Shots fired outside LBPD headquarters

Victim enters station with gunshot wounds

A 22-year-old man rushed into Long Beach Police Department headquarters early Sunday morning saying that he had been shot, just seconds after police said they had heard gunshots fired outside the facility.

The incident occurred on Sept. 16 at around 2:30 a.m., when the victim entered the building stating he was shot. A police dispatcher said that just a minute before the man entered, three or four gunshots were fired outside the precinct.

Police said that they observed what appeared to be a bullet hole in the glass of one of the precinct doors. According to a press release, all available units responded to headquarters and began canvassing the area for the shooter. No arrests were reported.

An officer inside the precinct administered first aid to the victim, whose name was not released, and quickly notified the Long Beach Fire Department. The victim, who entered headquarters alone, was transferred to a local hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for two gunshot wounds. Police said he is listed in critical condition. No other injuries were reported. Police said it was unclear if the victim was chased into the precinct, and the incident is under investigation.

This would be the fourth shooting to occur in Long Beach since May, and the third incident to be reported since Labor Day, when a man was admitted to Long Beach Medical Center with a gunshot wound. And on Sept. 10, police responded to 500 Centre Street after police heard what they believe to be several gunshots fired in the Channel Park housing area. No injuries were reported in that incident, and police said both shootings are still under investigation. They would not say whether or not any of the prior incidents are related to the shooting on Sunday.

This is a developing story.
