'So you think you know Long Beach?'

Scavenger hunt to test residents' knowledge of city

Residents will have an opportunity to embark on a citywide scavenger hunt the city is organizing and test their knowledge of the “City by the Sea” on Saturday, Oct. 24. The City of Long Beach will be partnering with local businesses and cityHUNT — a company specializing in group team building and adventures — to host its first ever scavenger hunt utilizing a custom mobile app.

Teams of four-to-five people will visit various locations and earn points as they learn about and enjoy the city “in a fun new way.” The event offers everyone a great opportunity to explore our downtown areas and discover all Long Beach has to offer, City Manager Jack Schnirman said.

“This is another one in a series of events and initiatives spearheaded by the city’s Department of Economic Development, which is working to ease the burden on our residential taxpayers and support local businesses,” Schnirman said.

The registration fee is $10 per person and closes on Oct. 22. Teams should gather at Kennedy Plaza at least 15 minutes before the hunt’s 1 p.m. start time. The event will conclude back at City Hall at 4 p.m. with an awards ceremony where prizes will be distributed.

Clues will encourage participants to visit each of the three downtown districts including the East and West Ends as well as Park Avenue, historic sights and recreational areas. City buses and trolleys will provide free transportation to participants as they navigate the city.

Schnirman added that the hunt was designed to draw participants into specific areas of the city where they can engage with the community in a fun new way while also helping the local economy.

“The goal is for everyone to take some time during the fall to enjoy the Long Beach life and also to support Long Beach businesses,” he said.

Groups of three or fewer will be joined together to form a team meeting the four-man minimum. Team leaders will download the cityHUNT app, available for iOS or Android, and receive clues. All teams will attempt to solve as many challenges as possible within the time frame of the hunt.
