Five candidates run in Lynbrook, three in East Rockaway; incumbents face challengers

Eight candidates are running for four open seats across both East Rockaway and Lynbrook school districts. Their annual budget vote and Board of Education elections will be held on Tuesday, May 17.

In Lynbrook, incumbents Bill Belmont and Heather Hanson are each running for re-election this year. They are challenged by three candidates — one of whom, Renee Gaughran, ran for a Board of Education seat last year. Janessa Harvin and Michael Moreo are also also running for the available seats in Lynbrook.

All five candidates will present their views on community issues on May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Lynbrook High School.

In East Rockaway, incumbents Kristin Ochtera and Patricia Nicoletti are challenged at large by Morgan Williams Avila. The League of Women Voters will moderate a “Meet the Candidates,” night on Tuesday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the East Rockaway High School auditorium.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Lynbrook at North and South Middle Schools, as well as the high school, and from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the small gym at East Rockaway High School. Absentee ballots must be submitted to each of the district’s respective clerks before May 10.

Candidates run at large in both districts, and the two candidates with the most votes will take office. Board of Education roles, such as president and secretary, are set internally at the reorganization meeting in July.
