A community pays tribute to Ed Sieban

Friends, co-workers, officials talk about the passing of E.R. mayor

From Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher:
The Village of East Rockaway has lost its leader with the passing of Mayor Ed Sieban on July 3, 2010 -- and the residents have lost a champion who, above all, looked out for their interests and well-being. I have also lost a friend. Ed and I were colleagues, serving together for eight years as fellow trustees. But when he assumed the title of mayor in 2007, he reached even greater heights as he came up with ideas, concepts, plans and visions for East Rockaway -- and encouraged his village board members and the village administration to do the same. My respect and admiration for Ed increased with each passing month he served as mayor. Robert Browning once wrote that "a man's reach should exceed his grasp." We should never accept only what is within easy reach. Ed Sieban never did. Of all my regrets over the community's loss of its leader, perhaps the
deepest is that we will never know the ideas he would have come up with in
the future. As a token of the Village Family's respect and affection for Mayor Ed, all village flags will be flown at half mast in his memory.
