Former East Rockaway resident Alvirda Griffen dies at 98

Former East Rockaway resident Alvirda Griffen died on Jan. 26 in Beaufort, S.C. She was 98.
Griffen would have turned 99 on Jan. 30.
She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, David Ira Griffen. She is survived by her three children, David Griffen (Laura), of Port Royal, S.C., Michele Griffen, of Greenville, S.C., and Beth Schatzlel (Dennis), of Port Royal, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial for Griffen was held in South Carolina on Feb. 16. She was buried at Bushnell National Cemetery, in Spring Hill, Fla.
Her family and friends said she would be greatly missed.
