Gonzalez takes on Becker in Legislature

Candidates vie for 6th District seat

Francis X. Becker, an original member of the Nassau County Legislature, is running for re-election to represent the 6th District. The Republican from Lynbrook was first elected in 1995. He is being challenged by Anthony Gonzalez, a Democrat from Valley Stream. Gonzalez is an active member of his local Democratic club and has worked on eight campaigns, including at the state and county level, and for Dennis Kucinich in the New Hampshire presidential primary.

The 6th Legislative District includes Lynbrook, Malverne and North Lynbrook, and parts of Valley Stream, East Rockaway, North Valley Stream, Rockville Centre and Oceanside. The term is for two years.

Herald: Why are you running for this seat?

Becker:
In my last term, with the Republicans controlling the majority in the Legislature and Ed Mangano as county executive, as a team we were able to accomplish a great deal. Most notably, we rescinded the unpopular and regressive energy sales tax imposed by former County Executive Tom Suozzi and the Democrats. In addition, we rescinded all the planned tax increases they had planned in the four-year plan. Our budget this year included no tax increases and our proposed budget for next year also includes no tax increase. Importantly to our communities, we invested millions in upgrading the Bay Park Sewage facility which had been allowed to fall into disrepair by the prior administration. I am very proud that Grossman’s Farm is now a working farm and there are additional plans to make additional improvements to the buildings on the property.
