One mistake

To the Editor:

When our children are young, we tell them it’s OK to make a mistake. East Rockaway High School has taught them that that isn’t true.

My son was an honor student, a scholar athlete and a nice kid who had never been in trouble. He made one mistake and was involved with the water-balloon-throwing incident. He accepted the consequences — but that wasn’t enough for the teachers at the high school. After the whole situation was finished and the hurt and disappointment were fading, the teachers felt compelled to take out an ad further condemning the involved students (“An open letter from the faculty of the East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School,” June 30-July 6). The teachers even had the gall to say that because of this one incident, these students were no longer the ones of which they are proud.

How dare they say that all my son’s (and the others involved) accomplishments and hard work are worth nothing because of one incident? My son knows that I am, indeed, proud of him. Those of you who are not because of this one mistake should be ashamed of yourselves.

Patrice Galligan, East Rockaway

A thank-you for the pre-prom

To the Editor:

As in previous years, limousines strung with white lights began parking by the pool entrance of Lynbrook’s Greis Park as early as 3:30 a.m. on the morning of June 24, waiting for the 5th annual Post Prom Breakfast festivities to begin. The Lynbrook Community Coalition sponsored the event.

About 120 high school seniors and their guests enjoyed a buffet breakfast, a swim in the pool or just relaxed on lounge chairs. The breakfast, catered by Lynbrook Bagels, included scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, bagels, muffins, orange juice and coffee. Many lucky students won prizes, including high-definition televisions, digital cameras, laptop computers, electronic readers and American Express gift certificates.
