Letters to the Editor: Lynbrook and East Rockaway

Touched by coverage and the kudos

To the Editor:
I wanted to commend the Herald on its fantastic coverage of East Rockaway during the flooding (“Scenes from a storm” Sept. 1-7).
I was one of the volunteers from the East Rockaway Fire Department to respond to the numerous calls at the height of the storm and the aftermath the day after. In my 15 years of being a volunteer firefighter, I have never experienced anything like this. I spent many of my years in Gales Ferry, CT., Ledyard Connecticut and Hagerstown MD., surrounded by mountains, so it was a new experience for me.

I want to say thank you to the residents of East Rockaway. Once again, in my 15 years of service I have never witnessed people standing in the street, telling firefighters passing by in an engine to “Be safe” and “God bless you.” It truly touched me deep inside. To know that volunteers in this area are appreciated is something special and something everyone should be proud of.

Robert E. Hagelberg, East Rockaway

Thanks for coming to the car show

To the Editor:
As another summer comes to a close, I would like to thank Mayor Fran Lenahan and his board, as well as the East Rockaway Chamber of Commerce, for hosting another successful classic car show.
Although this was a hot summer, the residents of East Rockaway and neighboring communities took a stroll down Main Street on Wednesday evenings to see the many beautiful cars that were on display. D.J. Ken (Kojack) Rappaport did an outstanding job. Even though it took two weeks to pull it off due to inclement weather, I hosted a volunteer firefighter night and fundraiser on Aug. 10. I would like to thank the members of the East Rockaway Fire Department and Lynbrook Engine Co. No. 1 for their participation on this special night. We raised $500 that will go to the Nassau County Burn Center.
I was pleased to have the opportunity to coordinate this event, and I look forward to next summer.
