Making, preserving history

To the Editor:
I would like to sincerely thank the Herald for the wonderful coverage with its two articles in the June 28-July 4 edition of the Herald regarding events hosted by  the Historical Society of East Rockaway & Lynbrook (“Authors share local history” and “A night at the Old Grist Museum’”). Special thanks to Brian Croce  for writing the stories and Sue Grieco for taking the photos. We appreciate the Herald’s continuous support of our local history.
The Historical Society was pleased to highlight Dava Kielb, a fourth-grader at Rhame Avenue Elementary School, at our recent event, “An Evening with Writers of Local History.” Dava shared her original story, “A Night at the Old Grist Mill Museum,” with her classmates and the many other residents who attended the lecture which was part of our 5th annual retrospective.
Our communities are very fortunate to have Art Mattson, Patricia Sympson, Betsy Davison and John Bishop  who have all researched, written and illustrated our local history and are willing to share their knowledge with others and preserve it for the future. The Historical Society is also very grateful to the Lynbrook Public Library for their continued support in providing us the venue to share our history with the public. Each year our public and parochial schools provide their fourth-grade students with the unique opportunity to learn about their local history, helping students pave the way to either make history or continue to preserve their history, such as Dava did.
