Budget is more than numbers

To the Editor:
This year, the Lynbrook School District is proposing a school budget with an increase of 2.81 percent over last year’s budget — the lowest school budget increase in the past decade.
This proposed budget was achieved without increasing class size, cutting programs or laying off staff, and while still remaining mindful of the current economic situation. Unfortunately, during these tight economic times, state, county and federal governments are trying to shift the tax burden to the school districts and the taxpayers to make up for their financial shortfalls and poor planning. The budget development process is a collaborative one, and open to public input from beginning to end. Every member of this district who wanted to be heard had the opportunity to voice his or her opinion on each and every aspect of the budget and the other propositions that will be presented for a vote.
At the end of the day, it comes down to much more than numbers on a balance sheet. It’s about our children, and giving them an education that will be a solid basis for wherever the road of life may take them. We encourage the public to come out and vote on May 17.

The Lynbrook council of Ptas
