Lifelong Lynbrook resident Charles Weiler dies at 85

Lynbrook resident Charles “Chuckie” O. Weiler died on April 18, with his daughters by his side. He was 85.

Weiler was born one of three children of Phillip and Edna Weiler on Nov. 6, 1934, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. When he was a baby, his family moved to Lynbrook, where he spent his life and raised a family. Weiler graduated from St. Raymond School and Lynbrook High School before joining the U.S. Army in 1952, where he served in the Korean War until 1954.

Upon returning to Lynbrook, Weiler joined the Lynbrook Fire Department’s Vulcan & Hose Company No. 2 in April 1954. He recently celebrated his 66th year as an active member after rising through the ranks to captain of the Vulcan Company, for which he also served as warden and a trustee. Additionally, he was a member of the Southern New York Fireman’s Association.

Weiler worked as a postal clerk in the Lynbrook Post Office and a driver for Louis Ohland Meats in Lynbrook. He also worked at Flinch & Bruns Funeral Home and, most recently, Perry Funeral Home, and bartended at the Lynbrook Elks Club for many years. He was a parishioner at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church for 58 years.

In Februay 1961, Weiler married Carole A. Coonan, and they raised their daughters, Debbie and Christine, in Lynbrook. He was fond of the Vulcan Company, the Mets, “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune,” reading books and solving jigsaw puzzles. He is remembered by many as “Chance Book Charlie.”

Weiler was predeceased by his wife in July 1982, and by his brother Philip. In addition to Debbie (Ken O’Connor) and Christine (Keith Worsdale), he is survived by his sister, AnneMarie; his grandchildren, Colleen, Timothy, James, Dennis and Carolyn; his nieces and nephews, Philip, Elizabeth and Virginia Weiler, and Patrick and Timothy Coonan.

Weiler was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery in Wading River on April 27. A memorial Mass at Our Lady of Peace and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
