Lynbrook students stop, drop and roll

Fire Department teaches safety emergency rules

Posted

As part of the weeklong celebration of Safety Week, students at West End School in Lynbrook received a firsthand lesson in fire safety from members of the Lynbrook Fire Department’s Vulcan Company. Fire department volunteers brought fire engines, hoses and fire gear with them to teach the children some unforgettable lessons about preventing and surviving fires.

Ex-Captain Pete Festa donned a full set of fire gear to show students what to expect in case of a fire. He explained that even though it can be a scary sight to be awakened by a firefighter in the middle of the night, they should never be afraid. Some other safety tips the firefighters shared: in case of fire, dial 911; always stay low when trying to escape a fire; make sure you have a smoke detector in your home; devise a family escape plan; and of course, stop, drop and roll if your clothes should catch on fire. At the end of the demonstration, students were thrilled to be able to climb on the fire truck and spray fire hoses with the firefighters.

Other Safety Week activities included Walk to School Day, a LIRR railroad safety presentation, a safety presentation by Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and a Heimlich maneuver workshop.
