Offense leads Lawrence past Lynbrook

Jordan Fredericks may have found a permanent home in Lawrence’s backfield.

In his first full game at tailback after switching from slot receiver, Fredericks, a junior, tied a career high with five touchdowns — four rushing and one receiving — and totaled 256 yards to lead the visiting Golden Tornadoes to a 47-28 victory over Lynbrook in a Nassau Conference III football showdown last Saturday at Marion Street Elementary School.

Senior quarterback Joe Capobianco, who threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns, became Long Island’s all-time passing yards leader with 6,507 as Lawrence upped its record to 5-1. The Owls (4-2) got three rushing touchdowns from junior Dylan Lucas and an interception return for a score from junior Eddie Bouhall.

“Jordan’s electric every time he gets his hands on the ball,” Lawrence head coach Joe Martillotti said of Fredericks, who found the end zone in every quarter and sealed the outcome with an interception late in the fourth. “Last week [at halftime] we made it a priority to get him more touches, and I don’t think he’s going anywhere now,” he added.

Fredericks capped a first half loaded with big plays for both teams with a 9-yard touchdown run with 54 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Lawrence a 34-21 lead. The drive covered 52 yards on eight plays and answered Bouhall’s 55-yard pick-six that energized Lynbrook less than two minutes earlier.

“I like how we battled,” Owls head coach Steve LoCicero said. “We had some good scoring drives. Our guys have a lot of heart, they prepare like champions, they have a great attitude, and they gave a superior effort.

“Sometimes things don’t go your way,” he added. “[Jordan] Fredericks is tremendous. He’s as good a football player as I’ve been around or coached against in a quarter century.”
