Owls brace for tough schedule

With a roster that runs 41-deep, Lynbrook wrestling coach Bob Bennett is looking for the daily competition in the practice room to bring out the best in the Owls.

“Everyone is working to get better every day,” Bennett said. “We’re in a tough conference again and I just want the kids to do their best. They all have individual goals and they have to work to achieve them.”

The Owls participated in the Battle at the Beach Tournament in Long Beach to open the season and also took part in a quad meet in Farmingdale to help prepare them for a challenging Conference 3A schedule that calls for dual meets with defending county champion Wantagh, Plainedge, Bethpage, Lawrence and Glen Cove.

According to Bennett, junior Vincent Rossi is Lynbrook’s leading candidate to achieve All-County (top six in each weight classification) status come February. Rossi will shuffle between the 145- and 152-pound classes during the regular season and likely compete at the lower weight come tournament time. “His body is cut out of stone,” Bennett said of Rossi. “He’s always been strong with a good throw and double-leg takedown, and now he’s got the mental toughness to go with it.”

Rossi, who was runner-up at 140 pounds, and senior captains James Ferrall (130 pounds) and Anthony Commando (152), led the Owls in the Long Beach tourney with third-place finishes. Bennett said Ferrall worked as hard as anyone on the team during the offseason and attended several camps. “He has a strong chance for All-Conference and he’ll have to work especially hard to have a shot for All-County,” Bennett said.

When he’s not beating opponents, scrappy sophomore Daniel Marom never makes things easy on them. “There’s no quit in him,” Bennett said. “He was down 7-2 in a match at Farmingdale and came back to win. That’s something you don’t see too often, especially from a young wrestler.”
