Police investigate abduction attempt in Lynbrook

Lynbrook Police have alerted parents in the school district to allegations of a child luring attempt that occurred on Oct. 31.

Local law enforcement stated that at approximately 5 p.m., an unidentified individual in a white four-door sedan approached a 13-year-old female in the vicinity of Lafayette Avenue, and asked her if she wanted to get into his car. She refused and walked away. The vehicle drove away, and returned a short time later, to ask again if she was sure that she did not want to get into his car.

Police said the victim used quick thinking and walked to a house pretending to be a trick-or-treater and informed the homeowner that she needed help. The Lynbrook police detective division is currently investigating this incident.

In response, the Lynbrook Public School district posted a "stranger danger" notification on its website to inform students and parents of the situation and provide additional information in order to have a frank discussion on the dangers facing kids today.

"As a reminder, please call 911 immediately if approached by a stranger. Encourage your children to not engage in any dialogue with strangers," School superintendent Melissa Burak said in a letter. "Please also use this opportunity to speak to your children about safety when they're out in the area. They should walk with a friend or in a small group."
