Road repairs underway in East Rockaway

The Village of East Rockaway is currently in the midst of a $1.2 million road improvement program that will fix up streets across the village. There is presently construction taking place on Centre Avenue between Forest and Ocean avenues. Village officials said the project will be completed by the time school opens up in September.

Village Clerk Doris Piedimonte said the Centre Avenue construction is part of a three-step project that will include additional repairs to Oceanview Road, extending from Ocean Avenue to Garfield Place and including the dead end streets of Centre Avenue and Roxbury Road. Also, construction will soon be underway on Wilson Street from Clark Street to Rocklyn Avenue.

“Continuing my administration’s improvements, village roadways and infrastructure remains a top priority,” said Mayor Francis Lenahan. “I’m glad I was able to put together a smart, five-year capital plan that outlines what needs to get done —and budget accordingly — to improve our roadways.”

Lenahan also highlighted the repair of Davis Street between Lawson and Basiley avenues, and said that road will be sealed in the fall. He added that the Davis Street construction comes at a savings to the tax payer because, “for the first time, [the Department of Public Works] will be paving specific roads themselves, putting to great use the pavement equipment recently acquired.”

The project will address improvements to the existing drainage system, the replacement of existing curbing with standard Nassau County combination concrete curb and gutter, existing aprons will be replaced with standard Nassau County concrete aprons, according to Piedimonte. She added that existing sidewalks will remain and only be replaced if there is a conflict of road elevation.
