They walked, they ran, they raised funds

More than 600 runners participated in this year’s 5th annual Fly with the Owls four-mile run/walk event, with Lynbrook resident Brendan Donoghue coming in first place with a finish time of 21:15.
“I have been running this race for years,” said Donoghue. “It’s a well organized race, and this year I ran with my kids.” His sons, Collin, 12, and Kevin, 8, participated with their father and afterward went back to celebrate at their house, which is on the parade route. “I do a lot of marathons,” said Donoghue, adding that he and some other local residents who run regularly have started their own local “runner’s club.”
“We had more young people than ever before,” said Race Director and participant Cathy Papandrew. “The age range was about 7 to 90,” she said, the latter person she was referring to being Valley Stream resident Bill Benson, who has run this race for years — this one the first as a nonagenarian.
Papandrew said that the figures are not in yet, but that she felt it was a very successful event. “It was our best one yet,” she said. “We look forward to putting the money back into the community. I want to thank the officials, the businesses, the runners, and all of the many, many volunteers who helped out.”
The 4-Mile Run/Walk started at 8:30 a.m. at North Middle School in Lynbrook. The money raised from this event will be used to assist a variety of youth activities in the Village of Lynbrook including the Lynbrook Junior Fire Department and Ambulance, Character Counts Committee, Middle School Triathlon Mentoring Program, programs in the Lynbrook School District and other youth serving organizations.
