Visit from Lynbrook firefighters

With different activities scheduled for each day, Safety Week at Lynbrook’s West End School proved to be an unforgettable educational experience for students in grades 1-5.

One of the highlights of the week was a visit from members of the Lynbrook Fire Department, who conducted a fire safety lecture for first- and second-graders. Capt. Peter Festa and Lt. John Matzen Jr. reminded students of important fire safety rules and gave them advice about what to do if there is a fire in their house. They cautioned the children not to play with matches and to “stay low and go” when escaping from a fire.

“Have a family evacuation plan, and don’t hide in a closet or under a bed in case of a fire,” cautioned Capt. Festa. “That would make it much harder for firefighters to find and rescue you.”

Students were invited to climb aboard the fire truck and man the fire hoses. They also were invited to climb inside an ambulance, where North Shore University Hospital paramedics Teresa Roberson and Jennifer Rofano reviewed the rules for dialing 911. They reminded the children that anyone can call 911 if someone is hurt, if there is a fire or other emergency, or if they witness a crime and need to summon help. They also reminded the students to be prepared to give their address to the 911 dispatcher.

While the first-graders were learning about fire safety, fifth-graders were learning basic first aid from the Red Cross and third graders attended an assembly titled, “I Am the Boss of My Body.”

Other Safety Week activities included Walk to School Day, a Halloween safety presentation conducted by AAA and a “When You Should Tell” assembly for fourth-graders The week ended with a fingerprinting program for the first grade.
