Davison teacher selected for fellowship

Marguerite Izzo, a fifth-grade teacher at Davison Avenue Intermediate School, has been awarded the prestigious Lowell Milken Center Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded on the basis of merit to educators who have distinguished themselves in teaching respect and understanding through project-based learning, or who have the potential for this distinction. The center selects and then collaborates with the best teachers in America on projects that celebrate unsung heroes in history.

Mrs. Izzo is the 2007 New York State Teacher of the Year and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Network of State Teachers of the Year. She is also working with the New York State Education Department to bring the voice of the practitioner to policymakers on the state level. She is also co-director of Malverne’s Teacher Center and an adjunct professor of literacy at Adelphi University.

As part of her fellowship, Mrs. Izzo spent one week in Fort Scott, Kan., working with teachers from throughout the nation. She and fellow teacher Stacey Montemarano have been working on a project-based learning assignment, supported by the fellowship, that incorporates both social studies and English language arts under the theme of “unsung heroes.” The project will take place during the 2013-14 school year with fifth-grade students.
