American Legion ceremony
Join the Malverne American Legion Post 44 on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. for a joint installation ceremony honoring Commander John Hassett and Auxiliary President Dr. Carol Hassett. To purchase tickets or for more information, call (516) 593-5358.

American Legion trip
Join the Malverne American Legion Post 44 on Oct. 14 for an Atlantic City Bus Trip Showboat. Tickets at $40, which includes $30 for casino play. Arrive at the legion hall at 8:15 a.m., bus departs promptly at 9 a.m. Reserve and pay by Oct. 1, free parking, coffee and doughnuts. Fall programs at Tanglewood
The Center for Science Teaching and Learning at Tanglewood Preserve, located at 1 Tanglewood Road in Rockville Centre, is holding a number of events and programs this fall. The schedule for September is as follows:

  • Nature Treasure Hunt and Amazing Animal Exhibit: Sept. 18, 10 a.m. to noon, all ages, $10/child, $5/adult.
  • Tiny Tots Water Play: Sept. 20, 9:30 to 11 a.m., for children 18 months to 3 years, $8/child.
  • Harvest Moon Hike — The Moon and Night Creatures: Sept. 23, 7:30 to 9 p.m., all ages, $5/person.
  • Tiny Tots — Shapes: Sept. 27, 9:30 to 11 a.m., for children 18 months to 3 years, $8/child.   

Spelling bee
Can you spell Tony Award winner? The kid participating in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee can. The spelling bee runs through Sept. 22. It takes place on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. at the Nassau Arts Center, located at 2222 Hewlett Ave. in Merrick. Tickets are $20, but students and seniors pay $16 on Fridays and Sundays. Call (516) 868-6400 for more information.

Girl Scout sale
The girl scouts of Franklin Square and West Hempstead are hosting their second annual Big Backyard Sale to be held at Rath Park in Franklin Square on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit individual troops and their local community service projects. The rain date is Sept. 26. Garage sale finds, crafts and bake sale items will be on hand. The first 100 purchases will receive a free eco-friendly gift! Please join the scouts as we Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
