From school cafeteria to poetry cafe

Posted

In honor of National Poetry Month, the Malverne High School cafeteria was transformed into a hip poetry café called Café 80 earlier this month. Replicating the Post World War II Beat Generation poets who created a cultural and literary revolution, students donned berets, beat on a conga drum and snapped their fingers in approval as their classmates read poems by famous authors, as well as original compositions. An open mic format allowed students to take their place at the podium whenever the moment felt right. School librarians Cathe Brown and Pat Martinez organized the event.
