Locals to work up a sweat for education

Posted

The Malverne Rotary Club's annual National Jean Company 5k Walk/Run for Education will return on Oct. 18. The race, which is held each year to raise money for the Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation, will begin at Howard T. Herber Middle School on Ocean Avenue at 9 a.m.

The foundation aims to raise money to improve the athletic facilities in District 12, which serves residents of Malverne, Lakeview and Lynbrook. Last year's race raised money to help purchase a new scoreboard for MHS's field and the scoreboard was first used on Sept. 12 during the football team's first home game against East Rockaway. In 2007, the race helped to raise funds, so that school officials could install a new weather-track at MHS.

The event attracts hundreds of residents from the three District 12 communities each year. Malverne Mayor Patricia McDonald, Lynbrook Mayor Brian Curran and Lakeview resident and Olympic gold medalist Derrick Adkins have already signed-up to participate this year. This is a rain or shine event, school officials said.

The entry fee for the race is $20 until Oct. 17 and registration will be held online at active.com up to that date. Participants can also register by mailing a check, payable to the Malverne Rotary Club, to Malverne Rotary Run for Education, PO Box 34, Malverne, NY 11565. The check must be received by Oct. 10.

The entry fee the day of the race is $25 and registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at Herber. For more information, call (516) 825-6511.
