Malverne track looking up

Posted

While it wasn’t a banner year for the track and field performers at Malverne High School this spring, there’s reason to believe that the return of the rich tradition of Mules track is on the horizon.

The ongoing renovation of the track and field complex has left Malverne temporarily without the necessary facilities for field events, meaning jumpers, pole vaulters, and other field competitors need to improvise their practice techniques in order the hone their skills.

Coach Colbert Britt is optimistic that good times are not far off. “We didn’t have as many participants as we’ve had in the past, and being without the facilities has been tough on the kids,” he said. “We still had a pretty decent season. We have a beautiful track now, and some promising young athletes. Things are going to get better.”

Senior Max Fequiere had a solid year a in the shot put. Fequire finished second at the Nassau Class A Championships at the Mitchel Field Complex with a heave of 45-feet, 10-inches.

The mark was a career best for Fequire who won the county title during the winter season. For his efforts, Fequiere was elected the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Sophomore Antonio Soares has a fantastic season for the Mules. Soares finished third in the county in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 8-inches, and ran a leg for the third-place 4 x 100-meter relay team that included William Ebron, Aalique Grahame, and Drake Taylor.

At the freshmen/sophomore championships, Soares took first in the 100-meter dash in 11.90, and second in the long jump with a jump of 17 feet, 9 1/4 inches.

Soares put up personal bests in the high jump (5-10) and the 100 meters (11.60) at the Nassau Coaches Invitational at Westbury High School. Ebron had a nice showing at the county meet, reaching personal milestones with 11.70 in the 100, and 23.90 in the 200.

Senior captain Brittney Baptiste performed well for the girls’ team, which is coached by Florence Balay, putting up personal bests in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes.

Sophomore Destiny Dyer, who was voted the most improved performer, and junior Kirztie Hernandez, the team’s MVP, each had a strong season. Hernandez finished fifth in the 100 with a time of 13.40 at the county meet.
