Hundreds attended Shaaray Shalom in West Hempstead this past Saturday as the temple hosted a Holocaust Remembrance Day event.

Shaaray Shalom partnered with the Jewish Community Relations Council and a dozen other Jewish groups on Long Island to bring together multiple communities. Marvin Kalb was the keynote speaker at the event, which was titled “My Conversations with Elie Wiesel: Lessons Learned for our World Today.” Kalb is a journalist that interviewed Elie Wiesel, who was a holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Kalb reflected on the life and teachings of Wiesel at the event.

This event occurred on Yom HaShoah, which is known by the Jewish community as a day of remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust. People attended the event in person and virtually to hear about Kalb speak on Wiesel’s life as well as learn about holocaust survivor Goldie Schwartz’ testimony. Along with these testimonies, the Nassau Lower Voices of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestras performed various choral selections.

The event concluded with the lighting of six memorial candles to represent the millions of Jewish people who were killed during the holocaust. There was an additional candle that was lit to represent the non-Jews that died during the Shoah, which was the period of mass murder under the Nazi regime.
