It was not a white Christmas, but snow — lots of it — came down the day after and into Monday.

Snow accumulations of nearly 20 inches dropped in some spots in Nassau County. Strong, gusty winds continued through Tuesday.

LIRR service limited

The Long Island Railroad has restored limited service after it was suspended on Monday because of the blizzard.

During Tuesday's morning peak service, trains will run westbound every half hour from Bablyon, and hourly from Ronkonkoma, Port Washington and Huntington. Lines that remained suspended as of 6:40 a.m. included Long Beach, Hempstead, Montauk, Oyster Bay, Far Rockaway and West Hempstead. Visit MTA.info for updated service updates.

"Hundreds of LIRR employees continue to work around the clock to clear snow and ice from tracks, switches and the third rail," The LIRR said in a statement on Tuesday. "The LIRR also expects to be able to gradually resume very limited service on other branches throughout the day

On Monday, the MTA urged customers to stay home, if possible, as blizzard conditions led to the suspension of service on the Long Island Rail Road.

The LIRR said it continued to operate equipment trains without passengers in an attempt to clear snow from the tracks.

New York City Transit is honoring tickets for subway service at Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica Station, but many of the lettered subway lines are suspended as well.

The LIRR also warns customers to beware of icy and slippery platforms and staircases.

"This suspension will continue until safe and reliable service can be restored," the LIRR said in a statement on Monday. "LIRR personnel continue to work through the storm to clear snow from the switches and tracks, however high wind gusts and drifting snow are making the recovery efforts extremely challenging. In addition, a number of stalled and stranded autos on LIRR tracks have hampered the recovery efforts."

Town declares snow emergency

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray declared a snow emergency on Sunday night.

"Our town is continuing its proactive practice of having deployed salt spreaders on the road at the first sign of snow, said Murray. "More than 200 pieces of equipment are utilized in the salt spreading and road plowing operation."

Pursuant to Chapter 174 of the Town of Hempstead Code, Supervisor Murray has
requested that residents remove cars from local roadways.

"In storms with significant snowfall and limited visibility, it is particularly important that cars are not parked on the roads," Murray said. "Snow plows can perform more effectively and efficiently when cars are not on the roads."
