Two Lynbrook students named National Merit semifinalists

Lynbrook High School seniors Max Grouchevski and Beatrix Weil have both been named Semifinalists in the 55th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

As Semifinalists, Grouchevski and Weil rank among the top one percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, better known as the PSAT.They will now have the opportunity to advance and compete for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring.

Grouchevski is an AP Scholar with honors, and a member of the National Honor Society. He is active in the Leadership Club, is the student government 12th-grade treasurer, and is a member of the Mathletes and Varsity Rifle teams. He is the managing editor of the school’s award winning student newspaper, Horizon, and studied at the Robert W. Greene High School Journalism Institute at Stony Brook University. During the past two summers, Max had the opportunity to intern for New York State Senator Dean Skelos, gathering information on relevant current events from local newspapers for the staff to review.

Weil is co-president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, president of the Spanish Club and a member of the Girls Varsity Basketball team. She qualified this year to perform in the All-State Women’s Chorus. Through her efforts as a member of the National Youth Advisory Board of the Souper Bowl of Caring, Weil has mobilized 30 Long Island schools, including her own, to organize local food drives on Super Bowl weekend, collecting thousands of cans of food for local food pantries. She is also a deacon at the Community Presbyterian Church of Malverne and is an "Engage Life" Assistant at the Atria Tanglewood, helping to engage senior residents in board games and other recreational activities.
