After a decade of waiting, Merokeans at last got a new supermarket in downtown Merrick last Friday when Stop & Shop opened to crowds of shoppers after a brief grand-opening celebration. Fifty percent larger than the old Stop & Shop, the new one measures 24,000 square feet.

Even as Stop & Shop employees, community leaders from the Chamber of Commerce and the fire department, a Town of Hempstead official and local reporters gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:45 a.m. last Friday, and snowflakes fell fast and thick, customers hurried past to see all that the new Merrick Mall supermarket offers and start filling their shopping carts. more

A Caterpillar front-loader shifted earth Tuesday behind the Merrick Mall Stop & Shop, where the nightclub Escapes once stood. Construction crews in recent weeks demolished the former nightclub, which has been defunct for years, as the first step in an expansion and renovation of Stop & Shop.

Stop & Shop remodel project welcomed locally

Plans for an overhaul of the Merrick Mall Stop & Shop have been delayed for so long that some its neighbors can scarcely believe that construction work is now under way. Barry Fox, president of the Merrick Park Home Owners Association, reviewed new plans for the Stop & Shop supermarket in the Merrick Mall on Monday. He said he worries about whether Stop & Shop will stick to past agreements to move its loading dock and dumpsters away from homes and to better maintain the property.
